TLDR
- TEM stock surged over 11% on Friday, trading at $50.95
- New clinical results published in Nature Medicine highlight Tempus’s PRISM2 AI model as a top cancer detection tool
- A short squeeze is likely contributing to the move, with over 30% of the float sold short
- Peer Doximity reported strong earnings, boosting the broader AI-healthcare sector
- Tempus’s planned acquisition of Personalis includes a clause that could kill the deal if TEM falls below $46
Tempus AI (TEM) stock jumped more than 11% on Friday, trading at $50.95 at time of publication, outpacing both the Nasdaq’s 0.86% gain and the Healthcare sector’s 0.3% rise.
The rally was driven by multiple catalysts hitting at once.
Clinical results published in Nature Medicine showed Tempus’s PRISM2 AI model performing as a best-in-class tool for cancer detection and prognosis. That news got investors moving quickly.
With more than 30% of the float sold short, the upward pressure likely turned into a short squeeze, amplifying the move.
Tempus also recently posted its first-ever quarterly profit and raised its full-year revenue guidance, giving investors more reason to feel confident.
The AI-healthcare sector got an added boost from Doximity, which reported fiscal Q1 revenue of $156.6 million, beating the $151.7 million analyst consensus.
Doximity CEO Jeff Tangney said AI is “up-leveling our business across the board” and called the market opportunity from AI “a real surprise and upside.”
That kind of language from a peer tends to lift the whole sector, and TEM was no exception.
On Thursday, CellCarta announced a strategic collaboration with Tempus, adding the company to its CDx Commercialization Lab Network as its second commercial laboratory partner for oncology companion diagnostics.
Acquisition Deal Under Watch
The rally also eased concerns around Tempus’s planned acquisition of Personalis.
The deal includes a clause that could terminate the agreement if TEM’s stock falls below $46. Friday’s move higher puts a cushion between the current price and that threshold.
Technical Picture
From a technical standpoint, TEM is trading about 5% above its 20-day SMA of $48.15, a sign the near-term trend is turning up.
However, the stock remains roughly 13% below its 200-day SMA of $58.31, keeping longer-term pressure intact.
The 50-day SMA at $51.11 sits just 1.1% above current levels, making it an immediate test for whether this move can hold.
RSI sits at 53.87, pointing to neutral momentum rather than an overbought reading.
A death cross formed in January, when the 50-day SMA crossed below the 200-day, a pattern that has historically signaled overhead supply on rallies.
Key support is at $46.50, while key resistance sits at $54.50.
The company carries a heavy debt load and continues to burn cash, with uncertainty around reimbursement for newer offerings like minimal residual disease testing remaining a risk factor on the balance sheet.
Tempus’s year-to-date performance still stands at -25.71%, with a market cap of approximately $7.91 billion.
