Huawei Technologies Group has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Vietnamese bank SHB, marking another step in the Chinese tech company’s push into the Vietnamese market.

The deal was announced by SHB on Sunday. Under the terms, Huawei will support the bank in designing its technology architecture and developing data platforms. It will also help ensure SHB’s systems remain stable and secure.

“The cooperation with SHB is an important milestone in the group’s market expansion in Vietnam,” said Spawn Fan, a senior Huawei executive, in the bank’s statement.

The agreement is not Huawei’s first move in Vietnam’s financial sector. The company has existing relationships with SCB, SeABank, and Home Credit, covering digital transformation, cybersecurity, data analytics, cloud computing, and banking system performance.

    A Deepening Presence

The SHB deal adds to what is becoming a meaningful footprint for Huawei in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economies. Vietnam’s banking sector has been pushing hard on digital infrastructure, and Huawei has been a willing partner.

It’s worth noting that Huawei’s growing presence in Vietnam wasn’t always a given. Until recently, Hanoi had a policy barring Chinese companies from its 5G infrastructure.

That changed last year when Huawei won contracts to build parts of Vietnam’s 5G network. The SHB deal appears to follow the same trajectory — closer ties between Vietnamese institutions and Huawei across both telecoms and financial services.

    What the Deal Covers

SHB is one of Vietnam’s larger private commercial banks. The agreement with Huawei spans several areas: technology architecture design, data platform development, and ongoing operational support for stability and security.

These are not small undertakings. Building data platforms and architecture for a commercial bank involves deep integration with core banking systems.

Huawei’s work in Vietnam’s financial sector, according to the Vietnam Banks Association, focuses on digital transformation, security, data analytics, cloud computing, and optimizing banking operations — areas that mirror what’s been agreed with SHB.

The 5G contracts Huawei secured last year represented a policy reversal from Hanoi. That shift opened the door for broader engagement, and the SHB agreement is one of the more concrete outcomes of that new direction.

Spawn Fan, the Huawei executive quoted in SHB’s statement, described the deal as a milestone — not just for SHB, but for Huawei’s broader Vietnam strategy.

The Vietnam Banks Association confirmed that Huawei’s existing financial sector work covers SCB, SeABank, and Home Credit, with the SHB deal now added to that list.
