LG Electronics and NVIDIA signed a memorandum of understanding on August 13 at NVIDIA’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The deal focuses on speeding up the commercialization of robotics using physical AI technology.
Just days later, senior NVIDIA officials visited LG’s Yangjae R&D Campus in Seoul to check on progress at the company’s Data Factory, which is currently under construction.
The Data Factory spans four floors and covers 10,000 square meters. It is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the year and will house several hundred robots.
LG has already deployed its CLOi home robots at the facility to generate and collect data. The building includes training spaces, a replica home environment for cleaning tasks, and a simulated manufacturing floor modeled on LG’s washing machine plant in Tennessee.
Data collected at the facility, combined with synthetic data generated through NVIDIA Cosmos, is expected to total 100,000 hours by year-end. That data will be used to train LG’s Robot Foundation Model, which acts as the central intelligence for its machines.
NVIDIA’s Technology at the Core
LG plans to connect its manufacturing and logistics data with NVIDIA’s full robotics stack. That includes NVIDIA Omniverse libraries, NVIDIA Cosmos open world models, and the NVIDIA Isaac robotics development platform.
These tools will allow LG to simulate environments and train robots more efficiently before deploying them in real-world settings.
The robots are focused on two main areas: household tasks like cleaning, and manufacturing work. LG sees both as long-term commercial opportunities.
Last month, LG set up a dedicated Robotics Business Center that reports directly to the CEO. The company has described this year as the official starting point of its robotics business push.
LG CEO Lyu Jae-cheol said the company aims to become a comprehensive robotics solutions provider by combining internal capabilities with partnerships like the one with NVIDIA.
The company plans to move from industrial and commercial robots into home robots as the technology develops.
NVIDIA shares were down around 2.19% on the day the news was reported. LG Electronics shares also fell by around 3.26%.
The Data Factory is expected to be a key part of LG’s effort to build robots that can handle complex tasks in both home and industrial settings.
